The Concept of Imagination and its Influence on Islamic Philosophical Theories of Dream and Prophetic Knowledge

Abstract

Throughout this article we focus on one among several moments in the history of reception of the Aristotelian Corpus, in cultural contexts other than that of is production. We focus on the results provided by the Islamic commentaries on Aristotle’s De anima and Parva Naturalia. Islamic philosophers (falasifa) of the classical period, first in the East and later in the West, rethought the theories of imagination and dream, aiming at a rational justification of the dogma of prophecy. The openness to all humanity of the possibility of reaching a knowledge similar to the prophetic one, provided the falasifa with a means of legitimizing the practice of Philosophy within Islam.

Resumen

A lo largo de estas páginas, nos detenemos sobre uno entre los diversos momentos que posibilita la historia de la recepción del Corpus aristotélico en contextos culturales diversos al de producción, como es el caso de los resultados proporcionados por la lectura islámica del De anima y de los Parva Naturalia. Los filósofos islámicos (falasifa) del periodo clásico, primero en Oriente y más tarde en Occidente, repensaron las teorías de la imaginación y del sueño, con el propósito de alcanzar una justificación racional del dogma de la profecía. Por otro lado, la apertura a toda la humanidad de la posibilidad de alcanzar un conocimiento semejante al profético, proporcionó a los falasifa un medio para legitimar la práctica de la Filosofía en el contexto del Islam.
