Recepção de São Paulo na obra De procuranda indorum salute, de José de Acosta

Abstract

Resumo: A interpretação da colonização da América Latina costuma destacar os aspectos negativos do processo. A versão hegemônica do encontro entre europeus e povos americanos destaca a violência e escravização dos povos indígenas. Para os indígenas, a colonização, bem como a evangelização, são uma agressão à cultura e história. Contudo, em meio ao violento processo de dominação e exploração, também podem ser ouvidas vozes que defendem a causa indígena. O presente texto trata de estudar a obra De procuranda indorum salute, do jesuíta espanhol José de Acosta. Acosta viveu no Peru e publica esta obra sobre a atividade evangelizadora no Novo Mundo após o seu regresso à Espanha, em 1588. Nesta obra, o autor oferece uma descrição da situação de indígenas e espanhóis encontrada no Novo Mundo. Nesta descrição, interessa, de modo especial, a leitura e a interpretação que Acosta faz da vida e das cartas de Paulo.

Abstract: The interpretation of the colonization of Latin America tends to emphasize the negative aspects of this process. The hegemonic version of the encounter between Europeans and American peoples highlights the violence and enslavement of indigenous peoples. For the native Indians, colonization and evangelization are an aggression against culture and history. However, amidst the violent process of domination and exploitation, voices that defend the indigenous cause can also be heard. This paper aims to study the work titled De procuranda indorum salute, of the Spanish Jesuit José de Acosta. Acosta lived in Peru and published this work about the evangelization in the New World after his return to Spain in 1588. In this book, the author provides a description of the situation of native Indians and Spanish people that was found in the New World. In this description, the main interest lies in Acosta’s reading and interpretation about Apostle Paul’s life and letters.
