Manuscripts Commentaries on Aristotle’s De anima in Coimbra During the Second Half of the 16^th Century. Relevant philosophical Aspects in Marcos Jorge, Pedro da Fonseca (attributed) and Cristóvão Gil.

Abstract

In this paper we summarise some of the results of recent research concerning the commentaries on Aristotle’s De anima, written in the context of the teaching of Philosophy in the University of Coimbra, during the second half of the 16^th century. Primarily, some of the philosophical and historical aspects of two manuscript commentaries of this period are analysed: the commentary dated from 1559-1560, attributed to Pedro da Fonseca (cod. 2399 BGUC) and the commentary dated from 1591, by Cristóvão Gil (cod. 2518 BNP). About the former, a state of the art concerning the debate around authorship of the commentary is sketched, and a few difficulties found in recent literature are brought to light. About the latter, its proximity with the Commentary on De anima from the Coimbra course is signalled, through comparison of some passages in both commentaries. Finally, we underline the relevance of the philosophy course by Marcos Jorge, written between 1556 and 1560, extant in the Real Biblioteca del Escorial.

Resumo

Neste artigo sintetizam-se alguns resultados de investigação recente sobre comentários ao De anima de Aristóteles escritos no âmbito do ensino da filosofia na Universidade de Coimbra, na segunda metade do século XVI. Principalmente, analisam-se alguns aspetos filosóficos e históricos de dois comentários manuscritos deste período: o comentário datado de 1559-1560, atribuído a Pedro da Fonseca (cod. 2399 BGUC) e o comentário datado de 1591, de Cristóvão Gil (cod. 2518 BNP). Em relação ao primeiro, faz-se um estado da questão da discussão sobre a autoria do comentário e relevam-se algumas dificuldades encontradas na literatura recente. Em relação ao segundo, assinala-se a proximidade com o Comentário ao De anima do curso Conimbricense publicado em 1598, mediante a comparação de algumas passagens de ambos os comentários. Finalmente, dá-se notícia da relevância do curso filosófico de Marcos Jorge, escrito entre 1556 e 1560, subsistente na Biblioteca Real do Escorial, ao qual fomos conduzidos no âmbito desta investigação.
