Abstract

The immortality of the soul and the possibility of the rational soul’s continued existence post mortem, separated from the body, up until the Resurrection, are pillars of the Catholic Christian faith. Manuel de Góis and Baltasar Álvares, in the Jesuit Coimbra Course, undertake the defence of this truth of faith philosophically, attempting to demonstrate via reason the postulates of Catholic theology.

Resumo

A imortalidade da alma e a possibilidade da subsistência post mortem da alma racional na condição de separada do corpo até ao momento da Ressurreição são pilares da fé cristã católica. Manuel de Góis e Baltasar Álvares, no Curso Jesuíta Conimbricense, procuram defender filosoficamente esta verdade da fé, esforçando-se por demonstrar com a razão os postulados teológicos católicos.
